Generations Of Warfare
You might say that there are no generations of war, war is just a war, that there are two or more countries that fought with each other used their weaponry against enemy and bla bla. But yes, there are generations of warfare. In 1989 US military has created the term Generation Warfare. There are actually four generations of warfare.
FIRST GENERATION WARFARE:
This generation includes the use of conventional weapons like Rifles. “First generation warfare” refers to battles fought with massed manpower, using line and column tactics with uniformed soldiers governed by the state. The increased accuracy of Rifled musket marks the end of First generation of Warfare. The concept of enormous line of soldiers standing face to face start becoming impractical as it caused the heavy casualties. The First generation ending with the start of 19th century and by the half of 19th century it completely finished.
EXAMPLES
• English Civil War
• American Civil War
• Anglo-Spanish War
SECOND GENERATION OF WARFARE:
About this warfare we can say that it is mostly like the first generation warfare because in this warfare conventional warfare were also used but of new technology. The modern weapon system was introduced in this warfare. Due to the modern tech the armies were then able to attack their enemy anywhere in the world. High altitudes war planes were introduced in this warfare. In short, the whole warfare mechanism was revolutionized. The formation of nuclear bomb was also in this warfare. The trend of trench warfare was also the part of 2nd generation. The 2nd generation saw the more advanced reconnaissance techniques and the extensive use of camouflage uniforms.
EXAMPLES
• American Civil War
• World War I
• World War II
THIRD GENERATION WARFARE:
This warfare is a totally a contrast from both the previous warfare. With the end of World War II, two countries appeared as the most powerful states in the world, which included the Soviet Union and USA. Both these countries possessed the Nuclear Power and both were holding the strong economy. In the result of this the world was split between two blocks one which was Soviet Block and the other was NATO Block. So that was the start of “Cold War” which was basically 3rd generation warfare.
The Cold War was the continuing state of political, economical and military conflict which exists between the USSR and the powers of the Western world including the USA after the end of World War II (1939-1945). Although the military forces never clashed officially but they expressed the conflict through military collation with different countries, nuclear arms race, proxy wars, propaganda and technological competition such as the Space Race. This Cold war ends with the breaking of Soviet Union in present Russia in 1991.
Third Generation Warfare is also be defined as the use of force with speed and bypass the enemy lines with surprise and collapses their forces from the rear. This generation marked the end of linear warfare on a tactical level, with units seeking not simply to meet each other face to face but to out-maneuver each other to gain the greatest advantage.
EXAMPLES
• Cold War
• Six Days War
• Gulf War
• Korean War
FOURTH GENERATION WARFARE:
It is the most advance type of warfare and the most dangerous too. The role of Army is become so weak that it is only used to give the “Last Touch”. This military doctrine was first defined in 1989 by a team of US analysts. The simplest definition includes any war in which one of the major participants is not a “state” but rather a “violent non-state actor”.
Fourth Generation Warfare involve the following elements
• Terrorism.
• Spread Anarchy in the country.
• Promote disputes in the Provinces.
• A direct attack on the enemy’s culture.
• Highly sophisticated psychological warfare.
• Control the main stream media.
• Spread Disinformation.
• All available pressures are used especially economical pressure through IMF and World Bank.
• Hike the prices of basic necessities.
• Put sanctions on the country.
By following these steps the country become internally so weak that it can’t able to support itself. Iraq is the splendid example of this warfare. US first put sanctions on it for ten years before attack. US implemented on each and every step which mentioned above before attacking on Iraq. After capturing it they used “divide and rule” system and divided the Iraq into three parts.
The break up of Yugoslavia is another example of this warfare. Whose break up starts from the independence of Crotaia and Slovenia on June25, 1991 and concluded on Feb 17, 2008 with the independence of Kosovo from Serbia.
Now US is trying to execute this same warfare in Pakistan. US backing the Terrorism in Pakistan through TTP and its agents in different cities of the country like Karachi. US have also the huge penetration in Pakistans main stream media like in GEO, which is now publicly said as the JEW TV. Through these channels they are spreading disinformation in the country that Pakistan is going to break again and that Pakistan is a failed state. If they want to do something secretly they just use the media to make some story like
Lawyer’s movement and NRO to divert the concentration of government and the public from their “secret work”. They also put the Pakistan in the hands of IMF and now practically Government is obligating IMF orders.
Our Army has done the great job in Swat valley and South Waziristan to combat the terrorism and crushed down the every asset of US in that region. We can get salvation from every conspiracy against Pakistan if we change our incompetent government and replace it by the noble government. The judiciary is doing a great job in this matter.
